The movie won two awards at the Cannes Film Festival and received critical acclaim for its realistic portrayal of life in Varanasi, a city on the banks of the Ganges river. The Plot of Masaan
The movie follows two parallel stories that eventually converge. The first story is about Devi (Richa Chadda), a young woman who works as a computer trainer at a coaching center. She has a secret affair with her student Piyush (Saurabh Chaudhary), and they check into a hotel room for sex. However, they are caught by the police, who blackmail Devi and her father Vidyadhar (Sanjay Mishra), a Sanskrit scholar and bookshop owner, for a hefty bribe. Devi is traumatized by the incident and Piyush commits suicide in the bathroom. Devi tries to move on with her life, but faces harassment and guilt at every turn. She eventually gets a temporary job at the Indian Railways, but decides to leave Varanasi and pursue higher studies in Allahabad.

The second story is about Deepak (Vicky Kaushal), a young man who belongs to the Dom community, a low caste group that works at the cremation ghats. He is a civil engineering student at a polytechnic college, and dreams of escaping his oppressive environment. He falls in love with Shaalu (Shweta Tripathi), a high caste Hindu girl who shares his passion for poetry and music. They face opposition from their families and society due to their caste difference, but plan to elope and get married. However, tragedy strikes when Shaalu dies in a bus accident while returning from a pilgrimage with her family. Deepak is devastated by her death, and contemplates suicide at the ghats.
The two stories intersect when Vidyadhar goes to the ghats to pay off his debt to the police inspector Mishra (Bhagwan Tiwari), who is also Deepak's boss. Vidyadhar sees Deepak preparing to jump into the river, and stops him. He tells him that life is not worth giving up, and that he should find a new purpose. He also reveals that he has paid off his debt, and that he is leaving Varanasi with his daughter. Deepak decides to give life another chance, and joins his college friends for a job interview in Allahabad. The movie ends with Devi and Deepak boarding the same train to Allahabad, unaware of each other's presence.
